How to Change the Default Language in Google Workspace
Google Workspace (formerly G Suite) is used by millions of businesses worldwide. Since teams often collaborate across regions, setting the correct default language is key to accessibility, communication and user experience.
Whether you’re an individual user who wants to use Gmail and Google Drive in a different language or an administrator managing organization-wide settings, Google Workspace makes it easy to change language preferences.
In this tutorial guide, we’ll show you how to change the default language in Google Workspace for users and administrators.
For Individual Users: Change Language in Google Workspace
If you’re changing your personal account settings:
Step 1: Sign in to Your Google Account
Go to myaccount.google.com and sign in with your Google Workspace credentials. From the left menu, select “Personal info.”
Step 2: Go to Language Settings
Scroll down to “General preferences for the web” and click on “Language.”
Step 3: Edit Your Default Language
Click on the pencil icon to the right of the Preferred Language option.
Step 4: Choose Your Preferred Language
Select the language you want to use as the default for your Google Workspace account.
Step 5: Save Your Settings
Click “Save”. Your Google Workspace will now update to show in your chosen language.
Your Google Workspace apps (Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Docs, etc.) will now show in your selected language.
For Google Workspace Admins: Set Default Language for an Organization
If you’re a Google Workspace administrator and want to set a language for all users:
Step 1: Sign in to the Admin Console
Go to admin.google.com and sign in with your Google Workspace administrator credentials. Go to Account settings > Profile from the Admin Console.
Step 2: Choose Language
Under the Account settings, find the Language option. Select the default language for your organization from the dropdown menu.
Step 3: Save Changes
Click Save. The chosen language will now be the default for all users’ Google Workspace apps.
Note: Users can still override the organization’s default language by changing their personal account preferences.
