For any business to perform a ShareFile to SharePoint migration (of any scale), using a powerful migration tool plays a mission-critical role. It is through the right migration tool that transferring user accounts and data in high volume along with other features becomes a breeze.

A clearly defined strategy is also crucial to overcoming all the challenges and making the migration project a complete success at a company-wide level.

SharePoint vs ShareFile

SharePoint Online and ShareFile both offer business-grade file/folder sharing and security features. However, SharePoint Online is much more than just a shared drive. It also functions as an intranet to allow seamless syncing of other Microsoft 365 apps, including OneDrive for Business, Microsoft Teams, Outlook, Calendar, and more.

ShareFile to SharePoint Migration Challenges for Businesses

Businesses planning to migrate ShareFile to SharePoint face several technical challenges primarily due to the limitations that Microsoft has set in SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business. The first SharePoint Online limitation that creates migration challenges is lack of support for specific special characters in file and folder names.

SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business do not support these special characters in file and folder names in Microsoft 365:

Unsupported special characters in SharePoint

Another limitation that makes it challenging for businesses to migrate ShareFile to SharePoint is file path length. Microsoft does not support the total decoded file path length of more than 400 characters in SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business.

However, with a fully developed tool like CloudFuze X-Change, businesses can overcome these challenges with automated processes.

CloudFuze automatically replaces unsupported special characters with either an underscore (_) or a hyphen (-) and creates separate folders for files with 400+ path length.
